Ditch the sippy cup!
Meet the TalkTools ® Original Honey Bear!
This cute bottle is a favorite among children and is one of our most popular therapist recommended tools. It is used to promote independent drinking using the handles, and introduce straw drinking.
Therapist use our famous TalkTools ® Honey Bear around the world to teach lip rounding, tongue retraction and other oral placement skills.
The Honey Bear with Straw is proven effective with children as young as eight months. The Honey Bear with Straw allows you to control the flow of liquid into a child´s mouth and teaches children to straw drink.
Gently squeeze the Honey Bear’s tummy to push the liquid up the flexible tubing into the child’s mouth. The child will soon learn very quickly how to suck and this will promote lip closure and tongue retraction.
The Honey Bear is a tool that allows the parent/therapist to control the flow of liquid into the child’s mouth and also to stimulate children to drink from straw. Sipping from straw aids children in learning lip rounding and tongue retraction which are essential skills in producing certain sounds such as /o/, /u/ and /k/, /g/.
The Honey Bear can also act as a transition from bottle-feeding to cup drinking. The Honey Bear is easy to use, such as a squeezable body and a flexible straw that is suitable for children who likes to bite straw as it would not break that easily.
Technique #1:
1. Place the straw in the lid of the Honey Bear, leaving 1/2" of the straw tip above the lid opening.
2. Use the palm of your non-dominant hand to support the child's jaw.
3. Place the tip of the straw at midline of the surface of the lower lip. If needed, assist with lip rounding by squeezing gently on the cheeks.
4. Use dominant hand to sueeze a small amount of the liquid into the child's mouth.
5. Remove the straw, maintain jaw support if needed.
6. Wait for a swallow.
7. Repeat this task 3 times at the begining of each straw drinking activity.
8. Allow the child to drink the remainder of the liquid as they desire. (i.e. bottle feeding, cup drinking etc...)
9. Repeat 1-3 times per day incresing the amount of single sips taken.
10. Gradually decrease how much you squeeze the Honey Bottle while reducing the amount of chin and cheek support as the child is able.
Goals:
Teach client straw drinking, jaw stability, lip rounding and tongue retraction for improved feeding skill level and emerging speech clarity.
